DIRGE was formed in September 2001 by Yann Lafosse (guitar, voice), Benjamin Daubeuf (drums, samples) and Mirjam Tautz (violoncello).
Their music is influenced by post-rock bands such as Mogwaï or Godspeed you black emperor, by folk music as well as by Arab Strap or The Tinderticks.
The members of the group come from rather various horizons : Yann, of Franco-British origin, met Benjamin in six-form college in Le Havre with whom he formed their first band Midnight Run.
When Benjamin met Mirjam, who came from east Germany with a classical music background, the band started rehearsing and started playing the sad slow melancholy dirges which now are their trademarks.
